³ÉÈËÍ·Ìõ Breaks Research Expenditures Record
New total tops last year’s expenditures by nearly 12 percent
EL PASO, Texas (Feb. 22, 2024) – ³ÉÈËÍ·Ìõ has broken its record for annual research conducted. ³ÉÈËÍ·Ìõ reported $145.7 million in research and development expenditures for fiscal year 2023, topping fiscal year 2022 by more than $15 million.
The total represents an increase of 11.7% compared to last year’s record of $130.5 million. Over the last five years, the University’s research expenditures have increased by 36.1 percent. University leaders credit the surge of growth to several large new awards and ramped-up research activities.
“This growth is a reflection of the hard work and strength of our faculty,” said ³ÉÈËÍ·Ìõ President Heather Wilson. “Our research leadership in areas like Hispanic health disparities, water, and national security is creating new knowledge. This is a very high level of research, particularly for a university of our size.”
“Our new record is a sign of the University’s status as one of the nation’s most prominent leaders in research, creating new knowledge and discoveries,” said Ahmad Itani, Ph.D., ³ÉÈËÍ·Ìõ vice president for research. “³ÉÈËÍ·Ìõ’s strong culture of research is undeniable, across all student classifications and faculty, and has further advanced ³ÉÈËÍ·Ìõ’s status as America’s leading Hispanic-serving university and a leading force in academia.”
³ÉÈËÍ·Ìõ’s annual research spending total takes into account research and development expenditures across all sources of funds, including federal, state and local government, industry and foundations.
The new data is part of the University’s most recent report in response to the National Science Foundation’s annual Survey of Research and Development Expenditures at Universities and Colleges.
